What is Soft Tissue Surgery?
What is a Soft Tissue Injury?
A soft tissue injury includes pain, swelling, bruising and damage to the toe. However, some injuries will require soft tissue surgery. At Jack Nathan Rehab, we provide ingrown toenail surgery also known as total nail avulsion.
What is an Ingrown Toenail?
An ingrown toenail is a common foot condition where the side of the nail starts to grow into the skin. This condition can cause pain and discomfort due to the toenail digging into your skin. Without treatment, an ingrown toenail can lead to infection.
How are ingrown toenails caused?
Ingrown toenails can be caused by a few different problems including:
- Tight-fitting shoes
- Nail injury (including stubbing your toe, dropping something on your toe)
- Cutting your nails wrong (cutting too short)
- Genetics
Symptoms Of an Ingrown Toenail
The symptoms of an ingrown toenail include:
- Inflammation around the toe
- Swelling around the toe
- Redness around the toe
- Blood or pus around the toe
- Painful/discomfort around the toe
Soft tissue surgery primarily focuses on treating issues related to the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and skin. The procedure often involves repairing the functional length of muscles and tendons, removing skin abnormalities, and enhancing circulation. Local anesthesia is usually used for patient comfort.
The primary goal is to alleviate pain, improve mobility, and prevent complications like infections. Quick recovery is one of the surgery’s advantages, allowing most patients to resume normal activities shortly after the procedure.
Common Conditions Treated:
- Ingrown Toenails: Treatment of ingrown toenails, which can cause pain, swelling, and risk of infection.
- Joint Instability: Soft tissue surgery can be used to stabilize joints by repairing muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
- Skin Abnormalities: Lumps, bumps, and other skin conditions can be treated effectively.
-
Circulatory Issues: Conditions affecting blood circulation, potentially causing pain and micro-injuries, can be addressed.
-
Limited Range of Motion: Issues affecting the mobility of joints due to muscle, tendon, or ligament limitations can be improved

Soft Tissue Surgery/Ingrown Toenail Treatment at Jack Nathan Rehab
The procedure to treat the ingrown toenail is done under local anesthetic injected into the base of your toe. The edges of the toenail will be cut away making your toenail narrower, which will make the toenail less likely to dig into the surrounding skin creating more issues. After the surgery has been completed, the ideal outcome is preventing the toenail from growing back and developing future issues.
It should be noted that in some cases the toenail will require a total avulsion, which is the removal of the full toenail to reduce the risk of ingrowns developing again. This is usually recommended when nails are thick and pressing into the skin.
Once surgery has been completed the site will be protected by covering it with a sterile dressing and bandage to promote healing. The dressing may need to be changed following the surgery and the area will be required to be kept clean to avoid infection.
Conclusion
Overall, Ingrown toenail is a common, but very painful problem. It is important to treat ingrown toenails as soon as possible, so no infection occurs. Our chiropodists here at Jack Nathan Rehab are here to help safely treat your ingrown toenail.
